Quinta do Monte Xisto is a bold yet refined red from the Douro Superior, produced by the Nicolau de Almeida family. The wine blends 55% Touriga Nacional, 40% Touriga Franca, and 5% Sousão from select north- and south-facing plots. This thoughtful mix brings harmony between structure and acidity, body and elegance—hallmarks of the estate's distinctive terroir.
Grapes are hand-harvested and gently transported in 20 kg boxes to the winery in Vila Nova de Foz Côa. Vinification takes place in traditional granite lagares by foot treading, followed by fermentation with indigenous yeasts over six days. The wine is then aged for 18 months in a combination of 600L and 2000L oak barrels at the family's warehouse in Vila Nova de Gaia, where proximity to the Atlantic ensures stable humidity and temperature.
On the nose, the wine opens with aromatic layers of rock rose, orange blossom, rosemary, and wild herbs. Subtle notes of ink and fennel unfold with air, revealing serious complexity. The palate is full-bodied yet silky, with vibrant acidity and soft, integrated tannins, leading to a long, elegant finish.
