Rosa Santos Família is a family project rooted in over four centuries of wine history. The family’s original home is Quinta de Valverde in Caldas da Rainha, an estate that entered the family through Rosinda Mayer Caldas Botelho Moniz and has remained in the family for more than 400 years.
Around 1620, Cristóvão Botelho Sequeira settled in Óbidos and was granted land for services to the crown. His son, Belchior Botelho Sequeira, was appointed by Alvará Real as the first Morgado de Valverde. Over the following generations the farm’s agriculture developed, with wine at its core.
After seven generations, the operation reached a high point in the latter half of the 19th century, when Gertrudes Magna Romeyro da Fonseca Botelho and her son Francisco Botelho Moniz de Sequeira led production to around one million liters annually, mainly for export. Bottles from this period still rest in the cellar at Valverde.
The current generation, Jorge Botelho Rosa Santos and Maria da Luz Granate Rosa Santos together with their children Frederico, Ricardo, Jorge and Vasco, works in Alentejo while carrying forward the tradition from Valverde. With wines bearing the family name, they honor their forebears and a cultural heritage that spans four hundred years.
